Former President Donald Trump has been the target of an assassination attempt, the world's rarest whale washes up in Otago, and it's Euro heartbreak for England.

1 Former President Donald Trump subject of assassination attempt

Former US President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt days before he was to accept the Republican nomination for a third time.

A barrage of gunfire set off panic, and a bloodied Trump, who was shot in the ear, was surrounded by Secret Service and hurried to his SUV as he pumped his fist in a show of defiance.

One spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured when gunfire broke out at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

US President Joe Biden warned Americans in a rare Oval Office address of the need to "cool it down" when it comes to election year rhetoric and political violence.

It also marks another addition in the United States' history of political violence. At least three US Presidents, one President-elect, and one former President have had assassination attempts against them.
