Taihape locals know exactly where Lesley Sole will be on any given day - knitting away in the window seat at the Crystal Bar tearooms.

Lesley Sole and her friends were a common sight in the window seat at the Crystal Bar Tearooms & Bakery on Taihape's Hautapu St. They meet several days a week to work on the items they make for charity.

Mostly, Sole knits clothes to be donated to children who really need them.

"I've seen a lot of kids, let's put it that way, with no warm clothes. And it just hurts," she said.

Sole used to volunteer at Rimutaka prison teaching inmates to read and write, before she decided to knit for the families of the inmates.

"I just hope it keeps them warm."

She also donates knitted teddies and other fuzzy goods to emergency services staff focused on helping others, such as firefighters, ambulance and police.
