Watch: Would-be shoplifter stunned as cop nicks his bounty

July 12, 2024

A would-be shoplifter left an Auckland supermarket empty-handed after the basket of meat he was stealing was unexpectedly stolen – by a police officer.

On Wednesday, a detective sergeant was entering a supermarket on Lincoln Rd in Henderson before work to replace a colleague's chips after they were "allegedly… consumed" when he spotted a man attempting to walk out with stolen groceries through the entrance way.

"With his basket filled with hundreds of dollars’ worth of meat, our officer could immediately see what was happening," police said today on social media.

CCTV footage shows the officer – without making eye contact – smoothly taking back the basket without breaking his stride as the man was left looking on, stunned.

The meat products were returned to supermarket staff.

"Police have now identified the offender and we will be speaking to him about the theft shortly," the police post noted.
