The mother of three children killed in a fire at a Sydney home over the weekend has returned to the scene of the blaze.

Children aged six, two and five months old were killed in the fire.

Police believe 28-year-old Dean Heasman, accused of setting fire to the home, barricaded his family inside while it burned.

He allegedly frustrated rescuers in their attempts to save the children.

Four other children and their mother survived and were hospitalised.

Yesterday, the mother returned to the scene of the fire.

Australia's 9News reports she was supported by her parents and police as she made the emotional return to her home.

The road was closed for the visit. The mother was still wearing her hospital wristband as she read condolence cards left at the scene.

Heasman remained in hospital this morning under police guard in an induced coma.

New South Wales police said they were treating the fire as a "domestic violence incident".

One of the surviving children reportedly told rescuers their father ordered them to stay inside while their home burned.

The child said he tried to fight his father to try and save his siblings, adding: "Dad tried to kill us."

And a neighbour, who said they were woken by screaming, claimed they saw the father trying to drag the children back inside.

Police and emergency services have praised the "heroic actions" of neighbours who they said went to "extraordinary measures" to save the lives of the remaining children.

The father was not known to police and did not have any previous convictions.

A homicide investigation is now underway, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
