Wellington Phoenix midfielder Ben Old has earned a move to Europe as he heads to AS Saint-Étienne in France’s top division for an undisclosed transfer fee.
It comes a month after former Phoenix goalkeeper Alex Paulsen signed with Bournemouth in England’s top flight.
Old said one of his biggest goals was to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
“This move means so much to me,” Old said. “All of us young players aspire to go to Europe and see how far we can go in the game.
“I honestly didn’t think it would be happening this early in my career but when Saint-Étienne came to my agent, and I was able to speak to them for the first time I was instantly hooked.”
Saint-Étienne spent last season in France's second division but earned promotion after winning a play-off against FC Metz.
The French club have won France's Ligue 1 10 times, the last being in the 1980-81 season, and more recently featured in the Europa League in 2019-20.
Old started all four of the All White’s matches at the recent OFC Nations Cup, which they won after beating Vanuatu 3-0 in the final.
Old joined the Phoenix's academy in 2018, and has spent six years at the club.
“I want to thank the coaching staff, all of the players and all of the fans who’ve helped me get to where I am now.
Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano said it was only a matter of time before Old earned a move overseas.
“I always knew Oldie had the ability to get to the next level,” Italiano said. “It was more about getting his body right and making sure we built up his minutes so he could showcase his talent," said Italiano.
“Oldie’s move aligns with everything that we’re doing and shows we’re on the right path.”
