Why some parents pay thousands to have someone help find a baby name

Any parent will know that it can be hard to settle on the right name when deciding what to call their little bundle of joy.

This is why some prospective parents are prepared to spend tens of thousands of dollars to hire professional baby namers.

One of those namers, Taylor Humphrey, has some VIP clients pay her $30,000 to find a name for their babies.

She told Breakfast there were several reasons why parents were willing to pay for help.

"I get clients who come to me when they're trying to conceive and they want that name, so as they're going through IVF or their conception journey, they can really call in the spirit of their baby," she said.

"I get parents who are already pregnant and they're just trying to work through maybe a difference in naming styles between the two parents."

She also works with parents suffering from "name regret" after their baby is born.

"So they've given their baby a name and they bring that baby home from the hospital, or they're getting to know that child, and they just feel like the name doesn't match their personality."

Humphrey said she spends a lot of time with these parents, working through their anxiety and helping them use their "intuition and inner sense of knowing [about] what the right decision is going to be".

Some of her VIP clients, like celebrities, professional athletes, and politicians, are willing to pay up to $30,000.

"That kind of category, where the name is going to be publicly announced and publicly recognised," she explained.

"But for the vast majority of my clients, these are are everyday folks, working people, so I do have a broad range of services."

Humphrey said her passion started when she was a child, reading baby name encyclopaedias at the library.

In 2015, she started an Instagram page that talked about the importance of names.

"I was writing about the importance of names, their meaning, the numerology, the personality traits associated with each name.

"People were just gobbling this up, and a lot of parents were coming to me, asking what I should name my baby.

"And it never occurred to me that this could be a career path."

Humphrey also offered some advice to parents struggling to decide on a name.

"Go into the process of labour and delivery with that list of names. Don't feel the pressure to commit to a name before you meet your baby," she said.
