Police release fresh details around child's 'unexplained' 2015 death

This morning, police made public that Alestra Kepa-Hati received a "number" of injuries shortly before she died.

Police have released fresh details as the investigation into the "unexplained" death of a Northland child nearly a decade ago continues.

Alestra Kepa-Hati was four years old when she died in October 2015.

She was living with caregivers in rural Kaikohe at the time.

Last week, police revealed it was investigating the death — later adding officers are speaking to two people of interest.

This morning, police made public that Alestra received a "number" of injuries shortly before she died.

"Alestra suffered a broken arm, broken pelvis and two separate head injuries in the weeks leading up to her death in early October 2015," Detective Sergeant Natalie Syddall said.

"These injuries do not just happen. It is likely someone knows something or has seen something and that's why we need the community's help.

"From the information we have gathered so far, Friday 28 August 2015 was the last day she was seen by anyone other than her caregivers and is said to have been uninjured and healthy."

Syddall urged anyone who saw Alestra or her two younger siblings after August 28, 2015 to contact police by calling 105.

"It has been nearly nine years since Alestra's death," she said.

"Allegiances change over time, and now is the time to do the right thing by this innocent child."
