Police keep 'open mind' on multiple Auckland drive-by shootings

July 3, 2024
The latest in a string of shootings at houses in Auckland took place on East Tāmaki Rd in Ōtara on July 1.

Police say they are keeping an "open mind" following an escalation in the number of drive-by shootings across Auckland in the past month.

On May 30, shots were fired on Ellis Ave in Mt Roskill. Witnesses told police a convoy of vehicles left the scene after the shooting.

Six days later, on June 5, a house in Onehunga’s Ahuwhenua Cres was shot at. The shooting left a large hole in the garage door.

It was followed by a second shooting half an hour later, after a gun was fired at a house on Haddon St in Māngere East.

On the evening of June 17, a firearm was fired at a home on Roscommon Rd in Manurewa while several people were inside.

Hours later, on June 18, shots were fired at a house in Bernia Pl in Weymouth. No damage was reported at the property.

Six days later, a gun was fired towards a house on Plumley Cres in Māngere.

On Monday, July 1, a gun was fired at a house on East Tāmaki Rd in Ōtara. The police presence in the area was increased in response.

A police source told 1News the spate of shootings did not appear to resemble the turf war which broke out between the Tribesmen and the Killer Beez in Auckland two years ago.

However, 1News understands some of the victims and alleged offenders are known to each other — and some do have gang ties.

Investigations are underway but it's understood officers are working through conflicting accounts of what has occurred during each of the incidents.

Until the investigations were completed, it remained to be seen what — if any — connections there were between the shootings.
