A group of school students were rescued from a bush area in West Auckland overnight.

The group of five high-school aged students began their hike from Auckland's Piha on Monday, and the alarm was raised when they didn't arrive yesterday afternoon in Whatipu, Three's The AM Show reported.

Police officers, alongside LandSAR and the police Eagle helicopter, helped with the search and located the group shortly after midnight.

"The group has since been accompanied to safety and no injuries were reported," a spokesperson said.

Auckland shift commander Inspector Kerry Watson told AM the students were "well equipped" and teachers rung police "promptly" when the students did not show up at the expected time.

"That's the reality of when you're working in the outdoors, sometimes things happen that you don't plan for," he said.

"I really can't say the school has done anything wrong."
