Woman charged after driving while five times over the limit

A woman has been charged after being caught by police driving while more than five times the legal breath alcohol limit.

Police said the Bay of Plenty woman was driving from New Plymouth towards Rotorua, where she was stopped along State Highway 30.

She had been "subject of numerous driving complaints along the way," Inspector Phil Gillbanks said.

Reports to police described the vehicle's driving as "erratic".

"The descriptions police received of the vehicle’s manner of driving are beyond concerning and oncoming drivers were forced to take evasive action to avoid collisions," Gillbanks said.

The woman, 48, is set to appear in the Rotorua District Court, charged with driving with excess breath alcohol.

"We can’t stress enough: if you’re drinking, do not get behind the wheel."

Gillbanks said across the long weekend, a "large number of police" will be on the beat " to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely".

He said officers will be on the lookout for unrestrained occupants, drivers impaired by alcohol, drugs or fatigue, drivers distracted by mobile phones, and vehicles that are speeding.
