Three youths in a stolen vehicle have been arrested after attempting to steal another car in Rotorua yesterday afternoon.

The trio – two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old – were allegedly in a stolen Nissan when they attempted to steal a Mazda vehicle on Fenton St around 2pm, Inspector Phil Gillbanks said.

The youths left the Mazda on Fenton St and were travelling into Sunset Rd when they were spotted by police patrols.

Gillbanks said officers were called to the scene after members of the public who saw the "suspicious activity" and alerted police.

Police surrounded Ford Rd and some nearby streets.

The trio were soon found by a dog team and arrested.

The teenagers have appeared in the Youth Court today charged with unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

"We will not ignore this type of behaviour," Gillbanks said.

"Incidents like this are not just a concern for the police but also for the public in that it’s invasive, frustrating and needs to stop."

He thanked the members of the public who reported the suspicious activity to police.

"We were able to get there fast thanks to the quick-thinking witnesses."
