Emergency services were called to the East Tāmaki overbridge on the Southern Motorway just before 8am.

One person has been arrested following a "disturbing" incident in Auckland's East Tāmaki this morning which police said was an attempt to gain publicity.

Emergency services were called to the East Tāmaki overbridge on the Southern Motorway just before 8am following reports of a person who appeared to be injured.

Police located a 57-year-old man who was "pretending to be injured," said Inspector Danny Meade.

"[This] was a significant and unnecessary incident, that in no doubt will have impacted many people over the disturbing sight," Meade said.

"It is also incredibly lucky this man's reckless actions did not cause injury to himself, or any other road users."

Meade said the man is being spoken to in custody and charges were being considered.

The incident caused lanes on the motorway to be closed and widespread travel disruption.
