Adelaide's largest shopping centre was evacuated and locked down after two groups of reportedly armed young men fought in the food court this afternoon.

South Australian police said they received reports of fighting at Westfield Marion Shopping Centre at around 3pm on Sunday (local time).

"As a result of the incident, centre management activated an audible alert and evacuation alarm, and the centre went into lock down," a spokesperson said.

Numerous resources including armed officers attended the centre to search for the group involved in the initial disturbance.

A spokesperson said the groups involved were not located.

Several shoppers who sought refuge in shops were safely escorted from the centre.

"Police are satisfied that there is no ongoing threat to the community."

The centre had more than 340 stores.
