Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault left one person in a critical condition in Kawerau this afternoon.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said police were called to the corner of Plunket and Islington streets at around 12.35pm to reports of an altercation.
"One person was found in critical condition and was transported to hospital.
"Four young people were taken into custody and are assisting with our inquiries."
Wilson said police understand there were several other parties present at the time of the assault.
"We are asking anyone who has not yet spoken to police to please come forward and speak with us so we can continue to build a picture of what has occurred."
St John Ambulance said it responded with two ambulances, one helicopter, one response vehicle and an operations manager.
