One person has died and three others were seriously injured after a van and truck crashed on State Highway 1 in Marlborough earlier this morning.

The crash near Grovetown was reported to police shortly before 7am.

"Three other people have been transported to hospital with serious injuries," a police spokesperson said.

State Highway 1, between Dodson St and Lower Wairau Road, near Grovetown remained closed, with Waka Kotahi advising motorists to delay travel or take alternative routes.

"The road is expected to remain closed for the next few hours as the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene," police said.
