A Kiwi school teacher has been selected to join the New Zealand Olympic Team in Paris — as their mascot "Goldie" the kiwi.
The entrants had to show why they were the perfect mascot by posting a video on social media displaying their skills, trick shots, dance moves, and enthusiasm for the New Zealand Olympic team using the hashtag #GoldiesP2P.
The mascot of the New Zealand Olympic team — Goldie — is a brown kiwi with a long yellow beak, sporting a black headband along with a black New Zealand Olympic shirt.
Kate Thompson, a teacher from Kapiti College, won the competition by submitting a video of her dressed up as a mascot with her students.
Thompson said she only entered the competition the day before entries closed on May 31.
"I get to go to Paris with one of my really good friends and I get to be the hype woman for New Zealand — it's the dream," Thompson told Breakfast this morning.
"I had a look at the itinerary yesterday and I get to attend the New Zealand team functions and my role there is to have some photos with our amazing athletes and I get to go to the men's sevens final and the rowing."
Thompson said she came from a swimming and triathlon background and was most excited to meet Hayden Wilde, who was competing in the Men's Triathlon at the Games.
Goldie first appeared in the 1980's as the mascot for the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth teams but had taken a break in recent years before returning for this year's Olympics in Paris.
