Construction work at a property in Hamilton has uncovered "what appeared to be human remains" yesterday afternoon.
In a statement, Senior Sergeant Leo Belay said police were notified of the remains yesterday which were unearthed by an excavator during construction work at a Hillcrest property.
"A scene guard was put in place overnight, and today police will be attending the scene to make further inquiries."
Belay said further investigation would determine more details about the remains, including whether they were human and how old they were.
He said investigations "may take some time" and members of the community could expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
