Sir Ian McKellen has been taken to hospital after he fell off a stage during a fight scene in a play at a London theatre.

The 85-year-old actor was in a performance of Shakespeare's Player Kings when he lost his footing and fell. It was unclear whether he has sustained any injuries as a result of the fall.

The audience was evacuated from the Noël Coward Theatre in London's West End and informed that the evening show was cancelled.

Player King was a production of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Parts One and Two. It began a 12-week West End run in April.

McKellen, who played John Falstaff in the production, was circling a battle scene involving the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he fell off the front of the stage. The actor cried out as the house lights came up.

One member of the audience told the BBC the incident was "very shocking".

"I really hope that he is going to be alright. As far as I saw, he was conscious because he was asking for assistance."

The actor's previous Shakespeare credits included Richard II, Coriolanus, Iago, Richard III, King Lear, and Macbeth.

His on-screen credits included Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and Magneto in the X-Men movies.
