Police are appealing for witnesses to a house fire in Gore yesterday which is being treated as "unexplained".

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it was called to the house fire on Duke St shortly after 11am yesterday.

The shift manager said two trucks attended from Gore, and a further two from Mataura as well as a tanker brought the fire at the rear of the property under control.

There was nobody home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.

In an update this morning, Detective Sergeant Brian McKinney said the fire was being treated as "unexplained".

"Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time before emergency services arrived, as well as the members of the public who attempted to enter the address prior to their arrival," he said.

Police urge anyone on Duke St with CCTV footage, or photos and videos from the fire on their devices to contact them through 105 or online.

A scene examination would be completed today.
