Cluster of 'light' early morning earthquakes rattle Hawke's Bay region

Three earthquakes, ranging from 3.2 to 3.9 in magnitude, struck near Wairoa within half an hour this morning.

Three light earthquakes struck near Wairoa within half an hour early this morning.

The trio of quakes all had the same epicentre, 20km northeast of Wairoa, and struck between 5.57am and 6.24am on Tuesday.

Geonet said the quakes were magnitude 3.9, 3.2, and 3.6 and described them as "light" and "weak".

Around 30 people reported feeling the 3.9 magnitude quake which struck around 5.57am at a depth of 24km.

Eight minutes later, the 3.2 magnitude quake struck 20km deep in the same location, with seven people reporting that they felt the earthquake.

The 3.6 magnitude earthquake at 6.24am occurred at a depth of 23km and was felt by 19 people.

A fourth 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the same location an hour an a half later at a depth of 19km.
