Pauline Grey, 67, was reported missing at Wairere Falls last night.

A body was found last night during the search for a missing woman in the Wairere Falls area, near Matamata in Waikato.

It is believed to be 67-year-old Pauline Grey who was reported missing in the area on Sunday night.

She is believed to have driven her 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback to the Wairere Falls track and searchers found a jacket believed to belong to Grey on a post near the start of the track.

Senior Sergeant Aaron Fraser said police would like to thank members of the public who provided information which assisted the search.

"Due to the location and dangerous conditions last night, police were unable to recover the body then," he said. "Specialist teams are back in the area this morning in an effort to recover her body."

Fraser also thanked the land search and rescue team, the rapid relief team who fed staff, and local iwi who are blessing the site this morning.

"I also want to thank the family who have been extensively involved in the search process and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Grey's death was not being treated as suspicious and was to be referred to the coroner.

A rāhui is in place over the Wairere Falls Track for the next seven days.
