Recent powerline tampering in Christchurch has plunged more than 20 homes into darkness for two nights in a row.
Police said recent incidents have been close to "schools, preschools, recreational facilities, and residential streets".
They are asking members of the public who see suspicious activity around powerlines to report information "as soon as possible with as much information as possible".
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley said: “Fortunately no one has been injured at this stage, however police remain concerned it is only a matter of time.”
"Tampering with powerlines places yourself and members of the public at risk of electrocution for a small return."
Today, a video was released by police showing recent powerline tampering incidents.
"Power outages can also have devastating effects, especially for those in assisted living situations, such as those on life support or assisted breathing machines," said a police spokesperson.
Police added: "If you hear this, or see similar equipment please contact police."
Police earlier said the high-risk thefts, targeting copper, were likely being done by a small group of offenders using bamboo poles taped together to stop themselves being shocked.
