One dead after crash near Hampton Downs, motorway reopens

One person has died following a crash on the Waikato Expressway near Hampton Downs that closed all lanes around midday.

Police said a car was travelling north when it is believed to have rear-ended a northbound truck.

"One of the occupants of the car exited the vehicle and was struck by another vehicle travelling in the southbound lane," a spokesperson said.

The person died at the scene.

The road was closed in both directions with diversions in place but was reopened, police said in an evening update.

Emergency vehicles have left the scene.

An investigation into the crash was underway with the serious crash unit conducting a scene examination, police said.
