NASA accidently broadcasts simulation of emergency on space station

June 14, 2024

NASA has had to issue an explanation after accidentally broadcasting a simulation of an astronaut in distress aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The audio was played on NASA's YouTube live stream and indicated a crew member was suffering from decompression sickness, more commonly known as "the bends".

On the live stream, a female voice can be heard asking crew members to "get commander back in his suit", check his pulse and administer oxygen.

The voice can be heard saying the condition of the mystery crew member was "tenuous".

In a statement via the ISS account on X yesterday afternoon, NASA clarified there was "no emergency situation going on".

The statement said a "simulation audio channel" was accidentally aired on its public channels.

"This audio was inadvertently misrouted from an ongoing simulation where crew members and ground teams train for various scenarios in space and is not related to a real emergency."

The statement said the astronauts aboard the space station were all asleep at the time.

"All remain healthy and safe."
