It's prompted an extra-long tea break during the fourth day of the week-long hearing in which lawyers for Watson have attempted to chip away at the reliability of forensic evidence.

He is appealing his double murder conviction for killing Ben Smart and Olivia Hope in the Marlborough Sounds after a 1997 New Year's Eve party.

The Court of Appeal is New Zealand's intermediate appellate court located in Wellington and holds a critical role in developing legal principle, correcting errors and ensuring consistency in lower court decisions.
