'Violent' man linked to viral dress jailed for throttling wife

June 7, 2024

A man linked to a viral photo of a dress that "broke the internet" in 2015 has been jailed for assaulting his wife.

The social media post centred on whether the dress was white and gold, or blue and black.

The snap was taken at Keir Johnston's wedding to his partner Grace. It was worn by Grace's mother, the BBC reports.

The couple were subject to brief celebrity status when a photo of the dress was posted on Facebook.

At the time, the newlyweds received a torrent of interview requests and appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show where they were gifted a trip to Grenada and $10,000.

But in May this year, Keir pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife and endangering her life at the High Court in Glasgow.

In March 2022, Keir Johnston pinned his wife to the ground and throttled her during a row at their home on a small Scottish island, the court was told. He later brandished a knife and threatened to "finish her off", the BBC reports.

Overnight, he was sentenced to 54 months (four-and-a-half years) in prison.

He was also barred from contacting or approaching his wife for a decade.

"Johnston is a violent individual who is now being held accountable for his despicable behaviour towards his victim," Police Scotland Chief Inspector Simon Shanks said.
