NZME proposes cuts to regional and community news roles

NZME is proposing to cut 10 to 12 roles across regional and community newspapers.

NZME has proposed to remove 10 to 12 roles across their regional and community newsrooms.

In a statement to 1News, NZME publishing chief content officer Murray Kirkness said the changes would allow the company to "reinvest in strategic markets and take our digital transformation to the next level".

Meetings were held today to share the proposal with staff.

"We are proposing to remove 10-12 current roles, some of which are currently vacant, and we will then reinvest into new editorial roles across the country. This is not about saving money but reinvesting in other editorial areas.

"The proposed changes would ensure we continue to serve regional online audiences while ensuring newsrooms have the resources and freedom to deliver excellent local content for print subscribers."

Some regional newspapers at the company included the Rotorua Daily Post, Hawke's Bay Today, the Bay of Plenty Times and The Northern Advocate.

The Gisborne Herald and SunMedia were both acquired by the company earlier this year.

The proposal by NZME comes amid a period of turmoil in the media industry, with hundreds of jobs set to be lost due to the closure of Newshub and TVNZ's cuts to current affairs programmes.

In the wider sector, cuts this year have been blamed on falling advertising revenue and a tough economy.

Last week, 1News reported more than a dozen community newspaper titles have merged, sold or shuttered in a wave of consolidation — with leading researchers raising concerns about the emergence of "news deserts".
