Former MP and New Zealand First life member Barbara Stewart has died at the age of 72.
A post to the NZ First Facebook page confirmed her death this evening.
"It is with sadness that we learn of the passing of New Zealand First life member and former MP Barbara Stewart," the post read.
"Barbara entered Parliament in 2002 for four terms, retiring in 2017. Barbara was a staunch advocate for family issues, children, health, and senior citizens.
"Her most notable achievement was working on the implementation of the New Zealand First policy that would see free health care become reality for those under 6 yrs old back in 2007.
"Her tireless efforts has meant that young families have the health support they need. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barbara’s family — she will be greatly missed by all."
People left comments of condolences on the post, with one reading: "So sad, Barbara was a great respected lady. Condolences to her family and God bless."
Her cause of death has not been revealed at this time.
