Speed camera 'appears to have been shot' in Auckland

A speed camera in Auckland "appears to have been shot by a firearm", police said.

Police are appealing for the public's help after a number of Auckland speed cameras were damaged – including one that "appears to have been shot by a firearm".

A spokesperson said there have been "recent incidents of wilful damage against safe speed cameras in parts of Counties Manukau district", adding cameras in Waiuku appeared to have been particularly targeted.

"The stands that these cameras sit upon have been forced down or pushed over, and in one concerning incident, the bottom of a camera appears to have been shot by a firearm," said Inspector Joe Hunter.

Police are appealing for the public's help after a number of speed cameras were damaged in Auckland.

"We'd like to remind people that speed cameras are proven to be effective in reducing deaths and injuries on the roads where they are operating.," he added.

"Damage to these cameras increases the chances of your loved ones not making it home safely."
