Flybuys New Zealand has announced it will be closing at the end of 2024.

The customer loyalty scheme gives members points for spending at selected retailers and has been operating in New Zealand for nearly three decades. Points accrued could be used to purchase products and services from affiliated businesses.

In a post to Facebook this morning, the organisation revealed it would be closing for Kiwis at the end of this year.

The post said: “Nothing changes for now” and that members would continue earning Flybuys across its network until October 31.

Kiwis would have until December 31 to spend their remaining points.

“You can enjoy our Black Friday and Christmas sales to make sure you redeem all your rewards before they expire,” the post said.

“Thank you to all our members who have supported Flybuys over many years.

“It’s been a privilege to be part of so many Kiwis’ lives.”

Loyalty NZ launched the programme almost 25 years ago. The company said the decision to close Flybuys was due to changes in the market.

"The market has changed significantly since we first launched, with businesses now having greater access to technology to create their own highly tailored loyalty programmes," a LinkedIn post read.

"The Flybuys model of a services and retailer alliance has run its course."

Flybuys was launched in New Zealand in 1996 and boasted 2.9 million members, reaching an estimated 80% of New Zealand's households.

Members collect Flybuys when they shop with partner organisations and redeem points to spend on rewards, which include savings on things like groceries at New World or fuel discounts at Z and Caltex.

Partner organisations include BNZ, Noel Leeming, State, Petcover, helloworld Travel, and LiquorLand.
