Upper Hutt resident Chris Clifton has an unconventional way of giving back to his community.

The retiree turns old metal into cash, driving throughout the Hutt Valley sniffing out scrap.

He receives donations from people like the local scouts and panel beaters, where he has stopped by every week for the last 13 years.

On this week's Good Sorts, Clifton explained how the harder you work, the more you are paid.

"People say it's not worth it but it is," he said.

Clifton knows exactly which bits are valuable, which is enough to donate money to those in need and pay rent on his shed.

He finds recipients of the money on Facebook, like one local who needed a glucose monitor, and the local scouts, who received $1000 for their jamboree.
