1 Revealed: The most complained about NZ ads of all time

From condoms in the mail to a dog muttering "bugger", the Advertising Standards Authority has revealed the top five most complained about Kiwi ads ever.

The list is part of the advertising watchdog's 50th annual report, and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) celebrated by revealing the five ads Kiwis have complained about most.

2 'Horrific pain' - Woman not given anaesthetic before cervix procedure

A gynaecological oncologist and registrar have been asked to apologise after a woman wasn't given local anaesthetic before a procedure that involved a live electrical loop being placed on her cervix.

The woman, in her 20s, was undergoing a procedure at Auckland's Greenlane Hospital to remove abnormal cells from her cervix following results from a smear test.

She said when the doctor began the procedure, she "was filled with the most incredibly horrific pain" and was screaming as she felt the electrically surging wire "cut through" her cervix.

3 Police identify man who went overboard from Wellington ferry

Police have identified the man who is believed to have fallen overboard from a Wellington ferry on Friday morning.

A massive search effort was launched when the ferry arrived in Days Bay, Eastbourne, having left Queens Wharf just after 6am.

The man was the sole passenger on the service and was no longer on board upon arrival in Days Bay.

Police said this morning the man had now been identified, but was yet to be located.

4 Indy 500: Two Kiwis finish in top 10 after thrilling end

Josef Newgarden put his cheating scandal behind him to become the first back-to-back winner of the Indianapolis 500 since Helio Castroneves 22 years ago and give Roger Penske a record-extending 20th win in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

Kiwi Racer Scott Dixon, and former Indy 500 winner, finished third as the highest-finishing Honda driver and was followed by Alexander Rossi, O'Ward's teammate at Arrow McLaren Racing. Chevrolet took three of the top four spots.

It was an unfortunate end for pole sitter Scott McLaughlan, who dominated for most of the race but ended up finishing sixth overall.

Prior to the race, McLauchlin had set a track record in his famed "yellow submarine" with his four-lap average of 376.94kph breaking the mark set by reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou last year of 376.93kph.

5 'Help us': Inquest played pleas for help from Dunedin party-goers

An inquest into the death of a student at an overcrowded Dunedin party has heard recordings of distressed party-goers pleading for help, saying someone is going to die.

University of Otago student Sophia Crestani, 19, died during a stairwell pile-up at a flat known as The Manor in October 2019.

The court heard recorded calls with police, including ones involving people screaming and pleading with them to hurry.

"Help us please," voices could be heard saying.

ONE UNLUCKY CROOK

An armed man's attempt to rob a Melbourne pub while wearing underwear on his head has hit the skids.

Wearing a makeshift disguise, the would-be robber demanded cash and threatened a staff member with a firearm at a Port Melbourne hotel in the early hours of Wednesday.

His plan fell flat when staff couldn't access any money — with the agitated man fleeing empty-handed.
