Warriors overcome adversity to beat Dolphins in Mt Smart thriller

The Warriors celebrate against the Dolphins.

The Warriors have made it two wins on the bounce after a gutsy performance against the Dolphins at Mt Smart Stadium this evening.

A makeshift Warriors team again took to the field after a number of late changes saw Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Taine Tuaupiki among a host of players ruled out but they prevailed 24-20.

In front of a crowd of 23,000 during the NRL indigenous round, the Dolphins got out to an early lead with tries through Jamayne Isaako and Herbie Farnworth.

However, the Warriors latest halves pairing of Te Maire Martin and Chanel Harris-Tavita kept their team in the hunt, with both dotting down in the first half.

The game was in the balance at 16-12 to the Dolphins at the halftime break.

From there tries to fill-in fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and forward Marata Niukore saw the Warriors edge out the Dolphins late surge to claim a famous four point win.

Captain Mitch Barnett said: "That's one of the best wins I've been a part of. I'm super proud of the team, we had people dropping out left, right and centre."

There was more good news for Barnett after the match, with NSW coach Michael Maguire confirming the Warriors forward has been selected for the upcoming Origin series.

Dolphins skipper and Kiwis international Jesse Bromwich said: "At the end of the day they just wanted it a bit more."

Last week the Warriors also caused an upset by beating the Penrith Panthers with another makeshift team.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, captain Tohu Harris, Rocco Berry, Kurt Capewell and halfback Shaun Johnson were just some of those who remained in the club's casualty ward, while Addin Fonua-Blake was forced to sit out the match for disciplinary reasons.

Fonau-Blake left the sheds early and missed his side's victory song following last Sunday's energy-sapping win over premiers Penrith during Magic Round.
