Two men found "motionless" at a pool in Auckland's Newmarket last night are still fighting for their lives.

Paramedics were called to the Olympic Pools and Fitness Centre at 7.30pm yesterday.

The two men were taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition. A spokesperson for Te Whatu Ora said there was no change in their condition this morning.

Peter Rust, director of the Newmarket fitness centre, told 1News the swimmers were spotted "motionless underwater" by lifeguards last night.

"Two men were seen motionless underwater at the deep end of the main pool. Pool staff responded with the assistance of swimmers at the pool," he said in a statement.

"Both men were resuscitated on the poolside with a doctor, who was a pool user, assisting. Ambulance officers took over and were able to take both men to hospital in a conscious but critical condition.

"The management and staff of the Olympic offer our deepest sympathies to the family of the two men and hope they recover fully.

Rust added: "We are certainly dealing with upset staff today and will be focused on their wellbeing, while hoping for the two men’s recovery."

He said "emergency services were notified immediately, and responded quickly with ambulance, fire service and police attending. Police are establishing the men's identities."

"Olympic staff carried out their usual lifeguarding duties throughout the day and immediately before this incident. They responded immediately to the situation and followed prescribed emergency procedures fully," Rust added.

"We sincerely thank the members of the public who assisted them with this rescue."
