A person has died following an incident involving a falling tree on a private property in Canterbury last night.

Emergency services were called to the address in Goughs Bay shortly before 10pm last night where a person was "located deceased after being hit by a falling tree".

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency said crews from Little River and Akaroa responded to assist police and ambulance staff.

Police earlier said WorkSafe had been notified of the incident, and have since issued a correction.

"It doesn't appear to be a WorkSafe matter," a spokesperson said.
