Volcanologists have warned ash could potentially fall on the mainland as minor eruptive activity continues intermittently at Whakaari/White Island.
The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 3 during the second day of confirmed activity, with "intermittent, energetic ejections" of steam and gas ongoing.
GNS Science volcanologist Yannik Behr this afternoon said volcanic activity witnessed over the last two days indicates a transition into an "eruptive episode".
This is categorised by pulsating periods of energetic steam and gas emissions that may contain minor volcanic ash concentrations, he said.
"There are no clear signs that eruptions will become much more energetic, but this could occur with little to no warning."
Currently, wind is transporting the steam and gas plume away from the mainland to the north and east, he said.
"Should future eruptions become larger, producing volcanic ash, and should the wind direction change substantially, it is possible that ash could be dispersed onshore."
The volcanic island, off the coast of the Bay of Plenty, is nearly 50km from Whakatāne.
"As we have no sensors on the island we are relying on webcams and satellite imagery to assess the situation," Behr said.
Limited information meant there was no clear indication if there was ash in the plumes to date.
The Aviation Colour Code was raised to Orange, meaning a volcanic eruption was underway with no or minor ash emission.
Bay of Plenty Civil Defence earlier advised boaties and maritime craft to steer clear of the waters around the island.
"There is nothing to see and it's a safety risk."
A spokesperson also acknowledged the increased recent activity could be "unsettling" for locals.
"We know this recent activity on Whakaari may feel very unsettling or distressing to people.
"There is no threat to life or safety from these eruptions, but that doesn't necessarily make a difference when our bodies react to traumatic memories- so please tread gently and look our for each other."
An eruption of the volcano in 2019 killed 22 people and injured 25 others.
