Kabosu, the dog known as the "doge" internet meme and the inspiration behind the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, has died at the age of 18.
The Shiba Inu was born in a puppy mill before before it was shut down. She was adopted by her owner, Atsuko Sato, from an animal shelter in 2008.
Kabosu gained popularity online in 2013 after a photo of the dog with her paws crossed was shared on her owner's blog.
The much-loved internet celebrity "crossed the rainbow bridge" this morning, Sato said on Instagram today.
"She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her.
"Thank you all so much for loving Kabosu all these years.
"I am certain that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world. That makes me the happiest owner in the world."
Kabosu was diagnosed with leukaemia and liver disease in 2022.
