1 Youth, 13, charged with murder after alleged bus stop stabbing

A 13-year-old has been charged with murder after a youth was allegedly stabbed at a Dunedin bus stop yesterday.

In a statement, the principal of Trinity Catholic School - where the victim studied - said: "It is so devastating, heartbreaking and sad to lose someone so young and full of energy and promise in such a senseless and horrific way."

Police have said extra police will be in the area to ensure the public feels safe.

2 Search for man missing overboard from Wellington ferry continues

Boats and helicopters are sweeping Wellington Harbour after a man was confirmed to have gone overboard from an East by West ferry early this morning. Police said the missing man is believed to be a Pākehā male in his 40s.

East by West Ferries general manager Mat Jonsson told 1News a mayday call was issued and a search began as soon as crew became aware the passenger was missing.

Services have been cancelled until further notice.

3 Explorers discover possible wreckage of World War II ace pilot's plane

Richard Bong was credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II - more planes than any other American pilot.

A search team believed they have discovered the wreckage of the plane, nicknamed "Marge" after Bong's girlfriend, in a Papua New Guinea jungle.

"I think it’s safe to say mission accomplished," Pacific Wrecks director Justin Taylan said. "Marge has been identified. It's a great day for the centre, a great day for Pacific Wrecks, a great day for history."

4 Whakaari/White Island volcanic alert level raised after minor eruption

GNS Science volcanologist Yannik Behr said a "vigorous" steam plume was observed above the island at around 8.20am on Friday.

The island's volcanic alert level was lifted to three as a result. Behr said there was no clear indication if there was ash within the plume.

An eruption of the volcano in 2019 killed 22 people and injured 25 others.

5 'Dealt a blow': Police arrest four of Gisborne's 'top' gang members

Three senior patched members of the Mongrel Mob and one patched member of the Mangu Kaha gang were arrested and charged following several operations into serious offending, said Detective Sergeant Eric Hunter.

He said the gangs will be feeling the effects of losing some of their top people.

"These arrests will hopefully remind gangs and criminal elements that we will continue to investigate them and that their illegal activity isn't welcome in our community."
