One person has been seriously injured following an assault in Dunedin this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Great King St just after 3pm, a police spokesperson told 1News.

St John Ambulance responded with one ambulance and one manager after being called to the scene at 3.08pm.

One person has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A second person has been arrested.

"Inquiries are underway to establish exactly what occurred," police said.
