A woman in her sixties has been airlifted to hospital this morning after sustaining serious injuries in a dog attack on the Coromandel Peninsula.

An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew were called to the scene in Tairua at around 8am this morning.

Attending air crew officer Simon Thorpe said: “It was an attack by a pack of dogs, apparently, four in total.”

The injured woman was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a "serious condition". A Te Whatu Ora spokesperson said a patient had been treated and was "stable in a ward".

Police said an incident was reported to police, but the victim was gone by the time officers attended.

"We have since spoken with the victim and are referring this incident to the Thames-Coromandel District Council," a spokesperson said.

In a statement from the council, a spokesperson said: "We're investigating what happened, but until it's complete, we can't say anything more about the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the woman injured in Tairua this morning and her family. We wish her a speedy and thorough recovery."

Around 27,000 dog-related injuries were reported in New Zealand each year, costing $15.8 million in the year to June 30, 2022, according to figures from ACC.
