Go large: Giant-sized playzone for grownups built in Christchurch

Ben Scott thinks big. The proud West Coaster, who now calls Christchurch home, began his barber business in a caravan in his father's backyard.

Today, Benny's Barbershop employs six barbers and hosts other businesses in his central city premises.

His new venture is bigger and bolder.

In 2023, Scott began outfitting a disused, former Air Force hangar in Wigram. He's hoping Benny's Hangar will become a hang-out place for kids of all ages, featuring activities such as axe-throwing, paintball, and skateboarding.

"Kids like to have a place to have fun, and adults need a place to be themselves and have some fun as well. That's why we've created Benny's hangar," said Scott.

Scott began work on his hangar project in 2023.

When Seven Sharp visited, some of the attractions were completed, with construction work underway on others. The most impressive feature to date is a giant skateboard, touted by Scott as the world's biggest.

A mini bike track will loop around a purpose-built mezzanine floor above the archery range, along with driving and golf simulators.

Scott believes the venue is ideally suited for corporate functions, but he was also reached out to rest homes in the area.

Since its inception, Scott has poured energy and funds into the project. He's now asked Cantabrians to come on board as investors to raise the $750,000 he said he needed to open the giant hangar doors in time for the July school holidays.
