Emergency services are at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash in rural Canterbury.

Police were called to the scene on Wards Rd at Kirwee, between Aylesbury and Highfield roads at 1.20pm. The crash happened as bad weather hit the region.

At least one person has received critical injuries and will be airlifted to hospital.

Fire and Emergency NZ said they understand there were people trapped.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
