One person is dead after being struck by a train in Horowhenua this evening.

Emergency services responded to the scene near State Highway 1, Ohau around 5.10pm.

"Those who were on the train and the victim’s family are being offered support," police said.

St John and Fire and Emergency NZ also attended the scene.

The road was closed while police carried out a scene examination but has since reopened.
