A fatal house fire in Auckland's Hillpark on Monday is not being treated as suspicious, police have confirmed.

However, investigators were still awaiting final results before releasing the cause of the fire.

Police were called to the scene on Freshney Place at around 6.55am.

"Despite efforts from first responders, two people received critical injuries, and sadly died at the scene," said police.

"A third person was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

"Police are still working through formal identification procedures for the deceased and their deaths will now be referred to the Coroner."

RNZ identified the dead men on Tuesday as Kiwa Ropitini-Fairburn and Tony Marsters, both aged in their mid 20s.

Also on Tuesday, 1News reported the whānau of the men who died said the pair were best friends who were "joined at the hip".

On Instagram, Cafe Hanoi said the men worked at their restaurant in the kitchen team.

"We are devastated by the double tragedy of two wonderful members of our kitchen team passing away in a house fire.

"All of our restaurants will be closed this evening so our team can grieve with Tony and Kiwa's families and friends.

"They will be dearly missed and remembered for their bright smiles, infectious laughter, and not in the least their positivity and warmth.

"Forever in our hearts."
