Slovakian Prime Minister shot multiple times in an attempted assassination, MPI confirms 391 job cuts, and Breakfast's Anna Burns-Francis welcomes a baby girl.

1 Slovakian Prime Minister gravely wounded in attempted assassination

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times and gravely wounded in an assassination attempt during a meeting with supporters overnight. His deputy believes the 59-year-old will survive.

A suspect was in custody, and an initial investigation found "a clear political motivation" behind the assassination attempt.

Fico has long been a divisive figure in Slovakian politics, but his return to power on a pro-Russian, anti-American message worried fellow European Union members.

2 Ministry of Primary Industries confirms 391 job cuts — more than initially proposed

Of the disestablished roles, 65 have left due to natural attrition or early redundancy; 193 were vacant positions; and 133 were current roles directly affected by final decisions, director-general Ray Smith said.

This is around 10% of the ministry's workforce. MPI is tasked with growing and sustaining primary industries such as farming, forestry, fishing, wine and food production.

The Public Service Association described the cuts to "our first line of defence" as "reckless short-term thinking" from the Government and said such a reduction "can only weaken" the work the ministry does.

3 Actor alleges assault on set of upcoming Taika Waititi TV show

Charlyne Yi, who plays Judy on the series Time Bandits, has alleged on Instagram of being "physically assaulted multiple times by an actor, as well as psychologically abused".

Yi, who uses they/them pronouns, also claimed of being gaslit by coworkers, producers and HR, and "coerced to quit" the project, which was filmed in New Zealand in 2022 and 2023.

4 Analysis: Why All Blacks coaches wanted Sam Cane to stay

Sam Cane, 32, announced on Monday that he would be standing down as All Blacks captain and leaving his contract a year early.

Those with knowledge of the deal say it was very much Cane's decision, and that New Zealand Rugby were more relaxed about releasing him from the final year of his contract than the All Blacks coaches were, writes 1News digital sports reporter Patrick McKendry.

5 More than a million trays of Zespri kiwifruit to be destroyed

Mice were found on Zespri's first shipment to Europe for the season last month and the company has been sorting through the fruit to try and salvage as much as possible.

Chief operating officer Jason Te Brake said Zespri's inspected 2600 (54%) of the pallets.

"It's become clear that we can't fully mitigate the potential food safety and reputational risk to the brand with enough certainty to release any fruit."
