Armed police are searching for people who fled from police in Tolaga Bay this morning.

Residents have been warned to lock their vehicles and secure their homes as police seek "a person or persons" who fled when officers signalled for them to stop at 3.35am today.

A police spokesperson said staff responding to the incident "are armed as a precaution".

"Please contact police if you see anything suspicious in the Tolaga Bay area, by phoning 111 if it's happening now or 105 after the fact."
