Sarah Hirini is on track to be avaliable for selection for the Paris Olympics as she is recovering quickly from her knee injury last year.
Hirini picked up a knee injury during the Dubai Sevens tournament last December which required surgery on her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 31-year-old has rejoined the Black Ferns squad to train with them on a non-contact basis, working her way up to full fitness.
Black Ferns Sevens coach Cory Sweeney said Hirini is progressing well and could expect to return after the Madrid tournament at the end of this month.
“We would hope to see here as part of a selection process for the Olympics over the next four or five weeks," Sweeney told 1News.
“Everything's tracking in that direction. We've got an open mind, we know the level of experience she’s got and how amazing she's been in leadership roles but also in critical moments on field as a performer.”
Sweeney is hopeful Tyla King will rejoin the side at the Madrid tournament starting May 31, after she suffered an ankle injury in the Black Ferns 24-5 win against Great Britain in Singapore.
Shiray Kaka has been ruled out of the Paris Olympics as she announced yesterday that she ruptured her ACL during the Singapore tournament.
