SH1 closed near Levin overnight after 'significant' fuel leak

State Highway 1 south of Levin is expected to be closed until early tomorrow morning after a fuel tanker rolled earlier today.

Diversions are in place near the incident near Ōhau and motorists were asked to avoid travel in the area if possible.

Initial estimates were that the road would be open this afternoon, however, the road was now likely to remain closed until around 2am tomorrow, police said in a statement just after 3pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was at the scene to assist with the cleanup and provide fire protection around what they call a significant and ongoing fuel leak.

"Multiple fire trucks and vehicles remain in attendance."

Police said the trailer of the fuel tanker rolled near Vista Rd at about 7.40am.

"There were no reported injuries."
