Part of State Highway 2 is closed after a vehicle fire in Central Hawke's Bay this afternoon left four people injured.
Police said SH2 in Waipawa is closed while emergency services respond to a vehicle fire that was reported around 1pm.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said: "Four patients; two in a critical condition and one in moderate condition were airlifted to Wellington Hospital and one in a serious condition was transported by road to Hawke's Bay Hospital."
Eyewitness Luke Chandler posted on X: "Something massive going on, 6 or 7 police cars, 2 ambulances, 2 first response ambulances, 2 fire appliances and two fire station call outs."

Diversions are in place and motorists are expected to avoid the area and expect delays.
