Barbarouses earns top award at Phoenix awards night

Kosta Barbarouses scored his 13th goal of the season against Macarthur FC.

Kosta Barbarouses and Mackenzie Barry took home the top awards at the Wellington Phoenix's awards night, being named player of the year for their respective teams.

Barbarouses netted 13 times this season, including a goal in their last match of the season in their 3-0 home win against Macarthur.

"I’m very, very proud," Barbarouses said.

"I won this award last time I was here after a pretty disappointing season. It feels a lot better to do it when the team’s going well.

"I’m a proud Wellingtonian as well so it means… a hell of a lot to me to win this award. I just want to keep helping the club achieve what it deserves to achieve."

Barbarouses’ goal at the weekend put him fourth in the A-League’s all-time leading goal scoring list, overtaking fellow Kiwi Shane Smeltz.

Barry became the first women’s player to play 50 matches for the club this season.

"I’m super proud of everyone in the team and I’m really happy to be receiving this award," said Barry.

"It’s an amazing honour — unexpected but I’m really happy with it."

Macey Fraser and Alex Paulsen took home both members’ awards, being named the under-23 and overall players of the year.

Fraser also won goal of the season for her free kick against Western United in round four. The Phoenix midfielder will leave the club after an impressive first season which earned her a move to American club Utah Royals.

Attacking midfielder Ben Old earned the men’s goal of the season award for his stunning half-volley against Adelaide United in round 19, and youngsters Lukas Kelly-Heald and Ella McMillan were named the academy players of the year.

The final award of the night was awarded to Phoenix general manager David Dome as the recipient of the Lloyd Morrison Spirit of the Phoenix award.
